Nigerian singer Jaywon has apologized to his colleague Ayra Starr after being accused of mocking her for not getting a Grammy nomination. The nominees for the 67th Grammys were recently announced, and despite her amazing year, Ayra Starr didn’t get a nomination.
Right after the announcement, Jaywon, who has had some online beef with Ayra Starr, posted a photo of himself with two Grammy awards, which many thought was a dig at her. Following the backlash, Jaywon has now apologized for his actions.
He expressed his admiration for Ayra Starr, saying he believes she’s one of the best female African vocalists. He explained that he doesn’t bring people down but lifts them up for future success.
“If you see Ayra Starr, tell her I’m sorry she wasn’t nominated for this year’s Grammys. I’m a huge fan of her music, and I believe she’s one of the best female vocalists Africa has. On this side, we don’t pull people down. We elevate, not just for today, but for the future. Ola Inu Kan,” Jaywon wrote.
Jaywon is a voting member of the Recording Academy, the organization behind the Grammys.
